Get Off the Merry-Go-Round of Stress

merry-go-round-hitchsterBy CK Wilde for 3GenFamily Blog

It’s 9 p.m. on Monday night. Dinner is done and my husband is finishing the dishes. School lunches are chilling in the refrigerator. It’ s time for me to start my evening rituals so that I can get my eight hours of sleep time. Without it, I just don’t function well at 5:30 a.m..

I should be getting ready for bed right now.

But, I’m not.

I’m still at the computer trying to polish a time sensitive document for our business website. I did not get it finished during the day.

But I’m feeling an increasing level of stress as my brain refuses to deliver brilliant writing (actually any kind of writing) to my fingertips resting wearily on the computer keyboard. My mind whispers “I need to get to sleep,” and then follows with “I need to finish this last paragraph.”

If I take more than a few minutes to finish my writing, I’ll be tired in the morning which always adds to my stress during the day. But, if I leave my assignment for tomorrow, it could get delayed even longer. (More stress.) It needs to get done now.

Round and round goes my mind. I’m feeling more and more stressed.

For me to accomplish anything in the next few minutes, I’ve got to get my stress (emotions) under control. I have experimented with breathing exercises, taking walks, making a soothing cup of tea and positive self-talk.

One technique that is most helpful is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). In the chapter Breaking the Cycle of Self-Created Stress, Rue Hass explains how to use EFT to do just that. It’s part of a free e-book titled 15 Ways to Health, Happiness and Abundance.

In addition to this article, this e-book has 14 other great articles covering a wide range of topics that affect individuals and families such as:

  • Happiness is an Inside Job - By Norman Shealy, MD
  • Gravity and the LOA – By Dr. Joe Vitale
  • Procrastination: Use EFT to Stop Holding Yourself Back From Moving Forward
By Gloria Arenson, MS, MFT, D CEP
  • EFT for Mom, Baby, and Dad from the Beginning of Life
Wendy Anne McCarty, PhD, RN, D.CEP
  • The Truth About The Zone: How to Achieve and Maintain a Peak State in Sports…and in Life -By Stephen Ladd
  • 9 more great articles about using EFT

This book has great information about using “tapping” to ease and enhance your life. And, its free.

I’ve talked about EFT before but if you have never heard of it, this e-book explains the history behind the technique of tapping on acupressure points to achieve a state of balance and healing.

So, I tapped my way to a calmer frame of mind and got my work done in record time.

Check out this e-book. It may surprise you.

Ya wanna know what helps me? (Pardon da slang, I’m one uh da Jersey Boyz.) Lavendar essential oil and Chamomile tea. I just picked up 4 oz of a really nice French Lavendar oil on ebay for about $12 with shipping. Has a nice, deep resiny nose, and it has good hang-time, doesn’t disappear too quickly. This is my third bottle; I previously bought some Bulgarian oil and another French blend. The Bulgarian stuff was powerful enough, but was a bit on the sweet side without much depth. The other French oil was a nice mix of sweetness and resin, but it was too volatile, didn’t hang for long.

Yes, I do see a need for essential oil reviews akin to fine wine reviews. We need a Robert Parker for essential oils!

So you’re now Twittering. Fantastic, but I’m staying away from it. Seems too tied in with the high-stress world. When I write or read, I want to sit down, relax and ponder — as you would with a fine glass of California wine (or a nice lavendar oil). Another sign of old age, I guess. Twitter away, but please try to keep up the thoughtful blogging too!
