My recommendation is for students early on in their high school years, to start building their resume. Just as this article suggests, there are many experiences that prepare a student for college success and life success. We want our students to begin thinking for themselves, practicing making good decisions.

When a parent is approached for permission and money for an activity, the parent needs to think, how is this building my child's resume. Then remember, it is okay to say "No".

I recommend community college courses for the summer before college and during the college experience to inexpensively get course credits and also to take difficult courses. A student can concentrate just on the one course when it is taken during the summer. They can add a fun elective as a "goody". This also works for a student that does not understand a particular professors teaching style. Take the course some where else. Make sure your university will accept the course before hand but many times, they do.
