Halloween 2008 Candy Could Be Dangerous

By CK Wilde for 3GenFamily Blog

Truth is scarier than the movies. Forget about Saw V. Just keep reading . . .

Back on September 29, 2008, the chocolate maker Cadbury recalled chocolate products in Asia and Australia because the milk in the product was potentially tainted with melamine.

On October 8, 2008, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned the public not to consume or distribute Sherwood Brands Pirates Gold Milk Chocolate Coins which tested positive for melamine. These candies are distributed in Canada by Costco and a wide variety of dollar and bulk stores.

Recalls Here in the US:

White Rabbit Candy is being recalled because it might be tainted with melamine. QFCO Inc. of Burlingame, Calif., is recalling White Rabbit Candy, which was distributed in California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington state. All packages have a logo of a white rabbit on the front with the words “White Rabbit.” No illnesses have been linked to White Rabbit Candy.

Lotte USA, Inc., Battle Creek, MI initiated a recall of all Koalas’ March Cookies on September 29, 2008 because they were produced in China and they may be contaminated with melamine. The product were distributed nationwide and to Canada through wholesale distributors and retail stores.  Lotte USA, Inc. is not aware of any illnesses or injuries associated with these products.

The US Food and Drug Administration states on its website that

The FDA is sampling and testing these products when offered for import from Chinese sources to determine if they contain melamine.

Milk-derived ingredients the FDA is testing include whole milk powder, non-fat milk powder, whey powder, lactose powder, and casein.

BUT . . .

American retailers’ shelves are piled high for Halloween with candy products that came from China. Are we really safe?

According to this YouTube video by Jeepers Media, major resellers imported tons of candy from China that came into the US before the FDA issued an Import Alert on October 10, 2008. He wants to warn everyone to be on the lookout for candy made in China that contains milk products.

Melamine poisoning is SERIOUS. It can result in kidney failure and death. Smaller amounts can cause chronic kidney problems.

Halloween is the one day we indulge our children by allowing them to eat way more candy than at any other time of year. But, it could turn grim if parents, teachers and others are not vigilant about these not so innocent treats.

Please . . .

Check the labels on the candy you bought. If it came from China and has any of the milk products shown above, TOSS IT OUT.

Warn you child not to eat any candy until you can look at it. If any of it came from China, TOSS IT OUT.

I love milk chocolate, but this year I’m tossing it all (no matter where it was made) because there is no easy way to determine what is safe and what is not.

Do you remember the pet food scare? The poisoned pet food was manufactured here in the US using tainted ingredients.

None of those companies intended to make bad pet food. They relied on others who failed to ship pure ingredients.

Just toss that candy . . . It may save your child’s (or your) life.
